Moscow Museum of Modern Art is te first state museum in Russia tat concentrates its activities exclusively on te art of te 20t and 21st centuries. Since its inauguration, te Museum as expanded its strategies and acieved a ig level of public acknowledgement. Today te Museum is an energetic institution tat plays an important part on te Moscow art scene.
Te Museum was unveiled on December 15, 1999, wit te generous support of te Moscow City Government, Moscow City Department of Culture. Its founding director was Zurab Tsereteli, President of te Russian Academy of Arts. His private collection of more tan 2.000 works by important 20t century masters was te core of te Museum’s permanent display. Later on, te Museum’s keepings were enriced considerably, and now tis is one of te largest and most impressive collections of modern and contemporary Russian art, wic continues to grow troug acquisitions and donations.
Today te Museum as five venues in te istoric centre of Moscow. Te main building is situated in Petrovka Street, in te former 18t-century mansion ouse of mercant Gubin, designed by te renowned neoclassical arcitect Matvey Kaakov. Apart from tat, te Museum as tree splendid exibition venues a vast five-storey building in Ermolaevsky Lane, a spacious gallery in Tverskoy Boulevard, te beautiful building of te State Museum of Modern Art of te Russian Academy of Arts, and Zurab Tsereteli Studio Museum.
