May Their Souls No Longer Wander InGloom And Doom

 Jin Feng

Isurfed the web about 221 today and found lots of articles and videos. There wasa short passage named Something About 221,in the end it wrote: “Nowadays lots of people talk about 221, but few had beenthere. Among those who did, mostly were second-line staff, while the livingcore staff keep in silence.” Why do they remain silent? Maybe it makes themfeel better to leave memories at inner depths. “After 221 had been shut down, only a few retirees were centralized settled in Sining, Qinghai or Hefei,Anhui, most of them were in 532 cities of 27 provinces. Head office of nuclearindustry had stopped funding them since Bureau of Retirement for NuclearIndustry of 211 established in 1995. None of the leading cadres showed littleconcern, even a visit. Instead, they took unreasonable deductions fromretirees’ paychecks or delayed paying wages.” It may be too normal to happentoday, however, those who had devoted their youth, blood, even lives to theNuclear Base Of Qinghai in the mid-90’s, are expecting for some kind of rewardstill. Holding the belief, they keep waiting for a predictable future without aword. Even if they upset the applecart eventually, I assume that they will remainsilent, with helpless beliefs and deep regrets though.   Then Ifound a documentary film on Tencent Video. An elder asked: Do you know whichyear the First Emperor of Qin reunified China? In 221 B.C. We were so shockedabout this code relating to Chinese history! If we go down this path, there’sno doubt that the decoding of 221 will become a specific research project. Itsconception was all about ‘unification’. Now we know, In a particular era, wewere unified to a place for some particular reason; In another particular era,we were evicted to different places for another particular reason. Command, summon and eviction were just processes of unification, which was known as ‘low-endpopulation’ today. In fact, the mode already existed during running 221, butfew people had thought about it ever.   Inthose years, the second generation of 221, who were still young kids, followedtheir parents leaving hometown to Qinghai and settled in the middle of nowhere. Now they are distributed throughout the country, and many of them have passedtheir half century. What will they reflect on as time was defined by specificpictures in their memories? Would they be able to follow the heart’s desirewithout overstepping the line in the coming days? It is hard but have to beanswered.   However, the two generations of221 were just born of the same bloodand similar features. The first generation used to be summonable, obeyable andverifiable to show their loyalty. On the contrary, the second ones were draggedin this event and migrated to 221 without sorrow and anxiety. There’s a gap ofyears and ages between them, which will reveal itself as time goes by. “Unification”is an expansion of territory stands for thoughts and cognitions. It’s politics. It’s flesh as well as spirit. One of the characteristics of planned economy isnon-selectivity, which is the myth and power of ideology. Under the control ofideology in the specific period, these two generations were coexisting in thesame community and specific historical context for sure. What's going todifferent about them was ones on the stage and the other in the audience; oneswere passively performed and the other were passively watched. In the prefaceof Between Past and Future, Hannah Arendtwrote that: As a result, they had no choices but to unpreparedly create apublic space , which was probably againsted their willing. Arendt’s wordsrevealed a common trait of the period - everything should obey politics. After decades, peopleof the first generation are in old age or have died off with years of tenets, secrets and grievances. Hoping for their souls no longer wandering in gloom anddoom, some of the second generation start reflecting and taking actions. Theexhibition of Zhang Da and Li Jianjun in Yell Space could be considered as atemptation of reflection and action.   Zhang Da and LiJianjun decided to take the puzzle to the two generations of 221. Two artistsstarted doing interviews and shooting about their past experience and currentsituations from 2014, and they have collected over 100 hours of footage tillnow. It will finally become our documentary film, but, as it’sstill so authentic, fresh and alive, we would like to hold an exhibition aboutfootage itself before editing. We are trying to give audiences a chance to editown versions about time and space with their questions, contents, imaginationand inspiration.   Problemsare at hand, ignore them are actually ignoring we ourselves.
