Katya Kan

An idiosyncratic specimen of globalization, Kan was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to a North Korean father and a Russian mother. Having caught a glimpse of the ex-USSR, she has a nostalgic, conflicting perception of political and cultural systems:

“Unable to fully assimilate into any one culture, I find myself as an outsider with an eclectic artistic taste. Art represents the act of seeking, assembling and immortalizing beauty. Through my artistic practice, I recreate the state of inspiration and emancipation, experienced during my childhood. My works strive to capture the ephemeral impressions. The concepts, which I explore in my work, include the globalization, surveillance, nostalgia, utopia and eroticism. Most recently, I was involved in exhibitions with the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), the Muse at 269 in Portobello and Herrick Gallery in Mayfair, London as well as the NYC Untitled Space and the New York Art Expo in the US.”

What Kind of Platform do Young Artists Need to Jump-Start Their Careers? –

The Crest Theatre first opened on Christmas Day, 1940, and though it has changed hands – and names – several times since then, the Art Deco façade sitting on Westwood Boulevard has always been a head-turner; located near the UCLA campus, the building had continued to catch Kristy Edmunds’s eye over the years. The Executive and Artistic Director for the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) at UCLA had been able to gain access to the 500-seat space for the occasional performance (the venue was originally a theatre for live performance built for Frances Seymour Fonda before being converted to a newsreel cinema during WWII), but felt that its potential was still left untapped.
