In the exhibition “Thresholds, Flaneur and Whirlpools,” artists use animals as symbols to explore the complex emotions between humans and nature. Huang Yongping’s “Chefs” questions the rules of survival through animal specimens, while Feng Zhixuan constructs new histories with animal skeletons. Dong Jinling symbolizes power with the “sea,” revealing the tension between the self and the external world. These works are like mysterious prophecies, leading us into an unknown world of the post-human era.
Huang Yongping: A pivotal figure in China’s avant-garde art movement, his work “Chefs” discusses survival rules through animal specimens.
Feng Zhixuan: Uses animal skeletons in his works as a medium for cultural resonance, deconstructing the present while constructing new histories.
Dong Jinling: Symbolizes power with the “sea,” exploring the complex relationship between power and self-identity.
Shuyi Cao (b.1990, Guangzhou, China) explores alchemical approaches to material, matter, and osmosis of knowledge. Through archeological speculation and ecological fiction, she contemplates the porous plurality of relations between science, technoculture, mythology, and cosmology. Her multi-medium sculptures and installations synthesise various organic and inorganic materials, and natural and artificial processes. Combining hand-crafted and digital artefacts, moving images, and sounds, the assemblages suggest heterogeneous material temporalities. Her resent solo exhibitions included: Orange County Museum of Art, California (2025), The Biennale Nationale de Sculpture Contemporaine, Québec (2024), Para Site, Hong Kong (2023),He Art Museum, Foshan (2023), Aranya Art Centre, Beidaihe (2023), Hyundai Motorstudio, Beijing (2023), Chronus Art Centre, Shanghai (2022), Ming Contemporary Art Museum, Shanghai (2021), Today Art Museum, Beijing (2021), NARS Foundation, New York (2021). Dong Jinling (b. 1986, Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China) graduated from Yunnan University at Art History and Theory department in 2008. She currently lives and works in Beijing.Dong Jinling lives in Beijing, where the contemporary art scene is lively and active, but she seldom joins the celebrations. Instead, she recedes herself in the crowd as the most common worker, feeling the heavy burden in this era and real life. In the meantime, through art, she is constructing another space connecting spirit to reality, where there is beauty, blessing, and struggle. Thus, her works bear traces of their unique experiences, universal poetry, and reverence for real life. Feng Zhixuan (b.1993, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China) lives and works in Shanghai and Beijing. A member of the Royal Society of Sculpture, he graduated from the Public Art Department of China Academy of Art in 2015 and the Sculpture Department of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018.Feng Zhixuan is constantly inspired by multiple life and artistic experiences. His work causes cultural resonance through non-fictional material levels, using rare materials in daily life for producing historical action. The cultural elements in his works are revealed from highly personalized material forms, transformed into historical and improvisational narratives which create nomadic island civilizations that transcend a single period and location. His sculptural installations always encompass a tension that dynamically fuses elements of mythology, decoration, adventure and space imagination. Materials serve as the binder of culture and the result of confrontation in Feng’s work, each of which is full of traces of “resistance” to the contemporary urban environment and de-humanizing production. In virtue of a nomadic process of creation and exhibition, Feng seeks to establish autonomous structures of vertical experience, cultivating an ecosystem of Anthropocene imagination while scavenging from the ruins of thermal industry. Huang Yongping (1954-2019, Paris, France) was an indispensable figure in China’s avant-garde art movements in the early 1980s. He wants to analyze the influence of a variety of potential factors in daily behaviors to reveal the rules underneath. He believes that the effectiveness of image does not originate from its significance carried, but due to their potential strength, which can release the audiences’ own experience. Also, it can work more consciously in this big social machine. He thinks development of anything is not single linear, “full-factor narrative” is the artist’s understanding of image creation, which is to generate a new narrative form with images and everyday objects in the space through drama, animation, installations and painting. Vice Director of Wind H Art CenterInitiator of The StairCASE-Young Artists ProjectInitiator of WindKIDS Children’s Art Festival
