In the mid-19th century, with the invention of photography in the West, the art of photography was introduced to China through its southern regions. At the end of the 20th century, alongside China’s reform and opening-up and the close economic exchanges between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, photography played a pivotal role in advancing China’s creative, design, and advertising industries. This period marked photography’s transition from a technical craft to a recognized art form. Photography has long been a witness to the history and development of cities, documenting urban life in Shenzhen, the transformation of its cityscape, and the growth of its design and fashion industries, while serving as a medium for dialogue with the world. To promote Shenzhen’s cultural and artistic exchanges internationally and introduce fashion photography to citizens from a new perspective, the Shenzhen Art Museum has curated an exhibition featuring the Dutch photography duo Scheltens & Abbenes. This exhibition marks their first solo show in China. The exhibition seeks to contemporize classical aesthetics, while exploring and constructing the boundary between virtual imagery and real life within the context of modern visual culture.

Scheltens & Abbenes are one of the most pioneering photography duos in the Netherlands today, comprising photographer Maurice Scheltens and visual artist Liesbeth Abbenes. Their work often begins as commissioned projects for museums, magazines, design and fashion brands, with still life as their primary subject. Using their lens to examine everyday objects, they treat these still-life subjects as “modular components for constructing new visual experiences.” Their sharp observational perspective challenges fixed perceptions of objects, aiming to evoke a sense of surprise and unfamiliarity in viewers. Scheltens & Abbenes innovate by altering the distance, perspective, and compositional relationships between the camera and the subject. The still-life objects in their images take center stage, being “dressed,” “manipulated,” and “deconstructed” until they are liberated from familiar contexts, creating a new way of seeing. Their pursuit goes beyond merely displaying the surface appearance of objects—it probes deeper, asking viewers, What are we really seeing? and revealing hidden layers of meaning beneath the surface.

The exhibition title, PROPJECTS, is not a typographical error but a deliberate fusion of the words “props”, “objects” and “projects”.  Much like their meticulously arranged works, this hybrid term balances between the real and the constructed, symbolizing the exploration of blurred boundaries between tangible objects and their representations. It is this process of boundary exploration that makes engaging with their works so intriguing. Scheltens & Abbenes aspire to “penetrate the so-called ‘essence of things’” without relying on language.

This artistic duo approaches the exhibition as a large-scale photographic installation. In their studio, they created a model of the exhibition space, arranging and interweaving photographs from different timelines and creative contexts. These images, originally created for various scenarios, have been resized, reconfigured, edited, and reimagined within the gallery, resulting in entirely new presentations. Everyday objects, such as perfume bottles, are magnified into giant images; scarves, no longer merely “accessories,” assume the role of “characters” in projected spaces. Photography magazines are embedded into tabletops, transforming workstations into the shape of magazines. Fashion pieces are printed onto transparent fabrics and suspended, while actual tapestries are turned into photographic works. Scheltens & Abbenes deftly navigate the interplay between the flatness of photography and the three-dimensionality of physical objects. Through these contrasts, they convey the charm and beauty of objects transforming into props, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the exhibition and become part of this “theatrical performance”.

Scheltens & Abbenes bring a fresh visual experience and cultural perspective to the exhibition, aligning perfectly with the Shenzhen Art Museum’s role as a facilitator of international cultural exchange. As a “cultural window” for the Greater Bay Area and China at large, Shenzhen has long been a vital hub for global cultural and artistic interaction. The Shenzhen Art Museum operates with the guiding principle of “rooted in Shenzhen, facing the world; rooted in the present, looking to the future.” With a focus on Shenzhen’s  urban development, international cultural exchange is one of its key priorities. This exhibition presents a comprehensive collection of Scheltens & Abbenes’ most iconic works to date. Let us step into their photographic world and explore the boundaries of the image together.
