INWARD GALLERY is proud to announce the exhibition “DECK BELOW” by young artists Gong Bo and Li Lee, which will be held on April 27, 2024, during the “Boundary-less Symbiosis – Shenzhen’s First Metro Art Festival.” Curator Wu Yunkai will oversee the exhibition, which will showcase a selection of their latest works. With the theme of “DECK BELOW, High-level Thinking,” the exhibition aims to present the artists’ reflections on the real world and their inner landscapes through their creative practices.
From nothingness
As the world rapidly evolves, real life seems to unintentionally push people to the bottom, while time flows like a gentle stream, constantly eroding the solid individuals like rocks. Facing this relentless erosion, some people become numb and silent like robots, some rebel and shout like rock singers, some mourn the passing of spring and autumn like wandering poets, and some quietly brew the power to break out of their cocoons in this silent flow. DECK BELOW refers to a simple and unsophisticated way of life that seeks inner satisfaction, emphasizes harmony with nature, and focuses on a positive attitude towards social responsibility.
Artists Li Lee and Gong Bo, after experiencing countless idealistic scenarios and the disillusionment of utopias, gaze at the void vortex of the real world from the lowest point of life and rebuild their personal beliefs amidst the “ruins.” Both artists’ creations focus on and express individual life experiences and reading experiences, as well as revelations and reflections brought by social phenomena or events, music, movies, novels, news, and more. Gong Bo’s paintings confront reality head-on, like Sisyphus staring directly into the sun, depicting the chaos and absurdity of his world through strong color contrasts and image conflicts. On the other hand, Li Lee chooses to lower the noise of life and return to the tranquility and softness of the countryside, exhibiting a postmodern existentialist-style humanistic care. Their creations are not only a perspective on life, but also a love for life and an ideal for the world, a process of seeking the meaning of existence in absurdity.

As the times rapidly change, nature is full of magic and absurdity, and memories are constantly fading. The works of these two artists in this exhibition are their nostalgia for the past, expressions of the present, and aspirations for the future. They are profound reflections on a world that has been widely influenced by nihilism.
