RayGallery group exhibition explores the interplay of mediated and natural senses, reflecting on natural poetics and perceptual reorganization under technological mediation.
We are often dazzled by the light nearby, yet it is this very light that illuminates the distant scenery. The interweaving of mediated sensations, blended with the participation of real senses, becomes part of our daily lives. Screen experiences may not serve as a replacement for nature but rather as an extension of its essence. The layered textures and rhythms of nature reconstruct the horizon’s expanse into a tidal movement between artificial light and natural elements. Thus, the excess of technological mediation gives rise to a reflective natural poetics. The demand for the reorganization of perception and its methods permeates the cadence of weather and celestial patterns, in the unfolding of rendering, luminous bodies, and the folds of the forest—the disenchantment of technological images and the habit of rapid browsing instead imbue the act of gazing with a certain divinity.
We are often influenced by the light nearby, which frequently originates from screens, digital technologies, and artificial environments. Yet, it is precisely this nearby light that inadvertently illuminates the distant scenery—those natural landscapes and details of the real world we have gradually forgotten. This visual extension from the near to the far reveals the intricate and subtle relationship between mediated sensations and real senses. The interplay of mediated sensations does not exist in isolation but is woven into our daily experiences through the participation of real senses. Screen experiences, as a crucial part of modern life, are often misunderstood as a suppression of nature. However, this is not the case. Screen experiences do not replace nature but rather expand and complement its essence. The proliferation of technologically mediated experiences turns the worship of technology into a self-reflective natural poetics, prompting us to reconsider the value of perception. Although the habit of rapid browsing diminishes our perception of depth to some extent, it also endows the act of slow gazing with a sense of divinity—a divinity that does not stem from the images themselves but from the sensitivity and reverence for the world we rediscover in the process of gazing.
The coexistence and interweaving of artificial light and natural elements are not accidental but an inevitability of modern life. We no longer see nature and technology as opposing forces; the textures of nature become clearer under the illumination of technology, while the brilliance of technology finds its place within the rhythms of nature. This fusion not only enriches our perceptual experiences but also compels us to reexamine our relationship with the world. Nature is no longer just mountains, rivers, lakes, and trees; it also encompasses the technological environments created by humans, and more importantly, the intersections between the two. Our renewed love for nature is not a return to any imagined non-technological past (or technological future) but a foundation for critically and artistically engaging with both technology and nature through a holistic perspective—today, we possess both the light nearby and the distant scenery.
