This exhibition features Iris Garagnoux’s easel paintings and installations. Inspired by gestation and an old midwife’s manual, the artist emancipates the body through layer – deconstruction. She explores the communication between the interior and exterior, with series like “Amnion”, “Wharton’s jelly” and “Language”.

一段穿越女性体内世界的有机旅程,同时见证着另一个生命的孕育过程。

「AMNIOTIC JUMBLE」 presents an organic journey through a woman’s inner body, while another existence is being created. 

艺术家艾瑞丝·迦拉纽将展厅构想为子宫实验室,受妊娠期胎盘与脐带发育过程启发,创作出一系列生命物质的生长序列。她尤为关注这些器官的转瞬即逝性、存在的中间状态以及由此产生的张力。

Considering the exhibition space as a womb laboratory, Iris Garagnoux imagines a sequence of living matter, inspired by the development of the placenta and umbilical cords during the gestation. The artist is interested in the ephemerality of those organs, the state of in-betweenness and the tension that is created.

孕育器官既是血肉相连的物理纽带,也是自我与他者的联结,更承载着跨代际的生命印记——这正是本系列作品探讨的核心。艺术家近期发现了祖先遗留的珍贵助产士手册——波德洛克1789年所著《分娩的艺术》。这本布满女性身体版画与血渍的古籍,成为她近期创作的主要灵感来源。

Gestational organs represent physical connections, link between self and the other and also transmit transgenerational imprints, which is crucial in this body of work. The artist recently found the precious midwife’s manual of one of her ancestors, “The Art of Childbirth” by Baudelocque dating from 1789. This old book full of woman bodies’ engravings and blood traces, inspires most of her recent works.

通过最新系列作品,艾瑞丝·迦拉纽将身体从原始机械功能中解放,运用层次解构手法,让流动的内在性占据画面主导。她采用半透明/半透膜材料作为朦胧入口,通过营造尺度与景深的暧昧性,探索液态内在与固态外在之间的交流律动——这种膜结构不断排斥与吸收,保护与瓦解。  

Through this recent series of works, Iris Garagnoux emancipates the body from its primitive mechanical functions and plays with hierarchy of layers by bringing on the first plan a fluid interiority. Seeking to initiate an ambiguity of scales and depth, she uses semi-transparent/ semi-permeable materials as diaphanous doorways, exploring the communicative move ments between a liquid interior and a solid exterior. A membrane that constantly rejects and absorbs, protects and fragilizes.

在「羊膜」系列中,艺术家于绷紧的画布上绘制水痕斑驳的印记,令人联想到包裹胎儿的最近层胎膜,以及体内持续流动的羊水轨迹。创作过程中,这种液态引导她环绕作品进行动态绘制。而「华通氏胶」系列则呼应脐带横截面,展现保护血管与动脉的凝胶状物质。「语言」系列为艾瑞丝的触觉宇宙增添了新维度:黏液物质从画面渗出,浸润画布,建立起味觉感知与语言系统的神秘联结。

In the Amnion series, the artist paints very watery traces on a stretched fabric, reminiscent of the closest layer that envelops the fetus and ongoing fluid movements within the body. This guides her to circulate all around the work during the process of creation. Meanwhile,the Wharton’s jelly series echoes to transversal cuts of umbilical cords and the gelatinous substance that protects vessels and arteries.The Language series adds yet another layer to Garagnoux’s haptic oeuvre by revealing mucus matters appearing to the surface and wetting the canvas. It connects the sense of taste and language.

艾瑞丝·迦拉纽(b.1995, 巴黎,法国)居住在伦敦,她的艺术实践聚焦于人体的可塑性——这种可塑性既体现在对人类渴望重新与自然建立深层联结的诉求中,也存在于与新科技共生演进的张力之中。通过在地板上作画的方式,艺术家借助体操训练与迷幻状态的经验,建立起一套本能的肢体语言库,进而将这种运动痕迹转录为雕塑装置与行为表演的碎片化呈现,例如触觉与沉浸式延展装置。通过对有机元素与合成材料进行层级叠加,结合当代社会关系及有生命体与无生命体之间的张力,作品呈现出符号化的新型色彩肌理。艺术家通过对德勒兹与加塔利提出的”无器官身体”(Un corps sans organe)概念进行探索,试图使流动的有机内向性显形——这种始终处于变动中的身体性既映射出跨代际传承的集体记忆,亦反映着当代人类的生存境况。迦拉纽致力于通过物质与非物质世界的交叠,捕捉中间状态、脆弱性以及躯体能量流的动态转化过程。

Iris Garagnoux (b.1995, Paris, France) based in London. Her practice is focused on the plasticity of the human body, which is torn between a deep desire to reconnect with nature but also evolving with new technologies. Painting on the floor allows the artist to create a repertoire of instinctive gestures, inspired by her experience in gymnastics and trance, which then she transcribes into sculptural and performative fragments such as haptic and immersive extensions. By layering organic and synthetic elements, new semiotic colours and textures appear considering the contemporary societal relationships and the tension between the living and the non living. By exploring Deleuze and Guattari’s concept ‘Un corps sans organe’ (A body without Organs), she seeks to make visible an organic interiority which is never fixed reflecting transgenerational legacies and contemporary human conditions. Garagnoux is interested in transcribing states of in-betweenness, vulnerability, and corporal energetic fluids, emanating from the physical and intangible worlds.
