Rippling presents works developed during the artist residency in Wanxia, Shenzhen, where the idea of the everyday border appears not as a line on land but as something carried through air and perception. Boundaries emerge from signals that move across space: the radio frequencies that drift beyond sight, and the social signals formed through slogans, urban concepts, and the visual language intended for distant viewers.

These transmissions generate subtle disturbances that spread through homes, streets, and the memory of the city. Often elusive and fragmentary, they oscillate between clarity and noise, yet they shape how places are seen and imagined. The works in this exhibition trace these intangible waves, giving form to the ripples that appear when a signal meets its environment.

About the Artist

Bockmeyer 旅游奖学金,开展其研究计划《通过类比雕塑与珊瑚礁修复潜入未来》(Diving into the Future through Analogue Sculpture and Coral Reef Restoration)。

Shawn Pakhin Tang (b.1994) is a media artist working across sculpture, installation, video, assembling found objects, industrial materials, and analog technologies. His practice explores the intersections between technological systems and lived experience, with a particular focus on developing an anti-digital methodology—a critical response to the efficiencies and abstractions embedded in contemporary digital production. Through analogue processes, Tang examines themes of malfunction, containment, and geopolitical tension, often constructing systems that foreground instability, tactility, and material resistance. His recent research shifts toward “sound as analogue” as both sculptural material and conceptual framework. He investigates how sonic forms can articulate climate anxiety, ecological memory, and the political dynamics of water. Within this context, his work engages with the notion of the hydrocommons, using sound and analogue systems to explore entangled relations between bodies, environments, and infrastructures.

In 2024, Tang was awarded the H.A. Bockmeyer Reisestipendium (Bremen, Germany) for his project “Diving into the Future through Analogue Sculpture and Coral Reef Restoration”, which takes place in Gili Trawangan, Indonesia. The project brings together marine restoration techniques and artistic research to reimagine submerged futures and alternative modes of sensing underwater ecologies.

Tang holds a BA in Interior Design from Birmingham City University (2016) and a BA in Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University (2020). He is currently completing his MA in Digital Media at the University of the Arts Bremen. He lives and works between Hong Kong and Bremen, Germany.

About the Artist-in-Residence Programme

MANGROVEGALLERY, in collaboration with Wanxia Art Centre, has launched the Artist-in-Residence Programme to provide emerging artists with an open platform for experimentation and exchange. Through flexible, dynamic, and diverse approaches, the programme showcases the uniqueness of each artist in the current context, while extending the gallery’s white-box space as a touchpoint. Set in Wanxia Village, it organically connects local culture, stories, urban life, and history through an artistic lens. Emphasizing flexibility and openness, the programme offers a site-specific experimental space focused on process and experience.
