Black Lives Matter Arts+Culture has been launched in a bid to promote African American artists ‘changing the world’

Black Lives Matter, the social movement dedicated to countering systemic racism in the US, is launching a new arts and culture platform. The initiative is aimed at promoting the work of African American artists, and supporting the role of art in social change in the US. According to organizer Patrisse Cullors, 100 percent of proceeds will go towards the activist group and its 40 local chapters.

Cullors told the Hollywood Reporter: ‘Black Lives Matter Arts+Culture uplifts artists who are staging cultural interventions and changing the world through their work […] I curated this group of artists because their work is critical to transforming the way we relate to the world and to ourselves.’

The platform is being used by the organization as a basis for launching pop-up stores, events and capsule collections. The initiative recently ran an exhibition at pop culture convention ComplexCon in Long Beach, California, featuring artists Damon Davis, Carlos Garcia and Oto Attah, curated by Cullors.

Alongside drawing attention to artists and designers of colour, Black Lives Matter Arts+Culture will function as an e-commerce site, selling merchandise, limited edition prints and clothing. The inaugural featured artist is graphic designer Emory Douglas, who served as the Black Panther Party’s Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture in the 1970s, with the website selling prints of his 1971 work We Shall Survive, Without a Doubt.

Cullors, a LA-based artist and activist, co-founded Black Lives Matter in 2013 alongside Alicia Garza and Opal Tometiin, frustrated by George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a black teenager in Sanford, Florida. Since then, Black Lives Matter has transformed into a network of activists initiating protests around issues of police violence and white supremacy.

In a series of comedies that started with 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and culminated in its 2013 sequel, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, director Adam McKay has established himself as America’s high poet of white guy imbecility. Those two films, plus three feature-length comedies in between, all starred Will Ferrell as some sort of insufferable idiot whose obliviousness to his own destructive tendencies bordered on magical. McKay could have extended the series indefinitely, replacing one cinematic dumbass with the next, but in 2015 he opted to direct The Big Short, a complex and didactic drama starring Ryan Gosling about the 2008 financial crisis. McKay may have switched genres, but he didn’t change his true subject matter: the film is as much about clueless white men and their destructive mistakes as were any of Ron Burgundy’s adventures. If a philosophical question emerged from The Big Short, it was whether it is possible – or worthwhile – to distinguish between stupidity and criminality. The Projections sidebar of the 2018 New York Film Festival – home of a variety of works grouped together under the experimental/avant-garde banner – is perhaps not the first place that one would go in search of star performances in the traditional sense, but then this year’s opening night film, Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s Diamantino (2018) is nothing if not an outlier. A populist underground film doing blockbuster scale on a budget, it gives Carloto Cotta, in the title role, as good a comic role as any actor has had this year. ‘MÉMOIRE DE L’OUBLI’ – ‘M_moire de l’oubli’

Réfléchir la Mémoire / Reflecting Memory, 2016, video HD, 48’The Francès foundation is pleased to welcome KADER ATTIA with the exhibition Mémoire de l’Oubli. Foundation’s spaces, located in Senlis, (oise), are entrusted to the artist in the form of a carte blanche to bring a new reflection to this place. The artist first joined the Francès collection 10 years ago with the acquisition in 2009 of the work Alpha Beta, from that moment other acquisitions followed. For this exhibition Kader Attia addresses the themes of memory, erasure and repair. He cleans from the archives of history, from personal stories. He reveals the traumas and then valorizes and repairs them. He deals with loss of identity and uprooting. The notions of knowledge and culture appear as answers, acts of resistance. The exhibition presents Alpha Beta, an arabic alphabet, Syrian Shells (2015), the video presented for the Marcel Duchamp Prize, Réfléchir la Mémoire, and a new site specific installation: Mémoire de l’oubli.  Born in 1970 in France, Kader Attia lives and works in Paris and Berlin.
